Tiny Wings
Tiny Wings is a charming indie title published by Andreas Illiger that recently hit the AppStore. Don't buy this one expecting guns and gore though, Tiny Wings falls into the "cute game" category. The cuteness turns out to be one of the most endearing qualities however, so it is very welcome.
The game starts out with a small bird sleeping atop a hill on an island covered in nothing but...more hills! Your goal is to guide the bird across various islands, collecting coins and speed boosts along the way, in an attempt to reach the furthest island possible before night falls. Tiny Wings uses a very simple one touch control system that makes it accessible to anyone. While the bird is sliding along, a touch to the screen makes him fold his wings, while releasing your touch makes him flap them. Timing is key, as the only way to gain altitude is ramping off of the hills. The game starts off calmly, but soon becomes a race against the ever intruding night. You'll find yourself cheering for the bird as it reaches the next island, and executes a perfect slide to initiate fever mode.
There's very little to complain about in Tiny Wings. The soft watercolor graphics are beautiful, and the developer nailed the controls. There is even a leader board and several unlockables to keep you coming back to beat your high score. Additional content would be a welcome addition of course, but this game is more than worth the dollar.
I considered Solipskier and Canabalt to be the best "run right" games out there, but Tiny Wings has joined their ranks as a game I highly recommend. Pick it up, and be prepared to lose track of time.
